When I wrote Secrets of Success, it was about a year after "To Achieve Your Dreams, Remember Your ABCs", had been published. Somewhat still in a state of surprise, that something I had written was published, popular and helping others, I felt challenged to see if I could produce another piece. I called the company that was publishing the "ABCs", at the time and asked if they would consider a proposal for a poster concept. They answered yes. However, because they were about to decide their next year's titles, they would need it within a month. This was in April, otherwise known as the "Oh no it's tax time", of the year. As well as, I had just returned from a two-month trip that left me with tons of urgent catch-ups.
I decided that I was up for the challenge, but wondered what to write about. One day while sitting at my desk, I was giving a lot of thought to what would be the perfect follow up to "Achieve Your Dreams". It dawned on me that I and other people that I knew had been able to achieve their dreams but not always successfully. For example, one friend of mine had recently achieved a life long dream of owning a business but it was failing and creating a lot of financial and relationship problems. I started thinking that to achieve one's dreams was not enough if one could not be a success at it and thus the subject "Secrets Of Success" came to mind and became my focus. I whipped out a sheet of paper and fed it into my typewriter, (remember those?) and in following the concept of making a listing, such as appeared on the ABCs, I wrote Secrets Of Success down the side of the paper one letter at a time. Great! I had a concept, but what the Secrets were remained a mystery to me and that was about as much progress as I made that day.
Over the next couple of weeks, while going through receipts, filling out forms and processing a stack of mail, I kept a piece of paper close at hand for notes and ideas. Everything going on around me became a part of the study of what the Secrets of Success were. I knew that for a piece to be accepted that it had to ring true and not just be clever. It is interesting what we can learn about a subject just by making it our everyday focus. Suddenly every person, conversation, reflection, and activity seemed to exist to show me a lesson about what makes one successful. Many ideas came from determining what does not equal to success and the opposite of what causes failure became the answer. Thoughts came at random until finally with one week left, I took out my notes and sat down to compose the piece. I remember sitting there, staring at the letters down the side of the column and wondering how I could do this in one week. A week!? It hit me, the ABCs had occurred to me over a period of months and here I was trying to accomplish something just as meaningful within such strict limitations. Where to start? First, I worded and reworded the main concepts I had determined should be a part of the piece so that I had enough to fit each of the letters in the title. That meant five had to start with "S", three with "C", etc. As you can imagine, this took quite a while to accomplish.
I worked on this steadily for a couple of days until I felt that I had the lines completed and I began filling them in on paper next to their corresponding letter. I was only about three of four lines into the process when I realized that some lines were quite long and some quite short and wondered how that would look on a poster. I filled in a few more and decided that unequal lines just would not do. It was already quite late in the evening so I decided to sleep on it. The next day, I attempted making the lines a little more similar in length while retaining the original idea, another head scratching and timely challenge. Some improvements were made in the appearance but still, even though I understood that computers were able to justify the lengths of a line for layout purposes, I knew that I would not personally be happy with the lack of perfection. That's when I realized in order to make the piece special and even more real, that I wanted to make every line the exact same length of characters and spaces. Wanted to, might be a little understated, it suddenly became my perfectionist's need.
Another sheet went into the old fashioned typewriter and I began again. The rewrites to form the lines while still starting with the corresponding letters and totaling the same number of characters and spaces seemed even more challenging than determining what the secrets were in the first place! With time ticking away, about half way through, I almost decided that it was just too limiting to adequately translate the concepts in this manner and to go back to just writing them in regardless of the space they took. But that did not feel right; in fact it felt like giving up. As I thought about the time left to complete the project and the confines that I had invented that ended up making my task even more difficult to accomplish, another secret of success became clear to me. At that moment, I realized by continuing with my plan that particular secret would exist hidden within the body of the piece and would in fact become the underlying essence of the message.
Would anyone ever guess it? It didn't matter; I knew it would still speak through the lines. Back to the drawing board - or typewriter in this case- where I made a conscious choice about the exact number of characters and spaces and started again. The number of characters and spaces is a clue to the second hidden secret of success, if anyone is interested in trying to decipher it. Otherwise, I will save it to reveal another day. J I decided that if I could successfully complete the piece in the three days that I had left, using the hidden secrets that it would prove their validity.
By my description of how the secret occurred to me, you may have figured it out already, but if not, the secret is this: No matter how many boundaries or limitations we have to work within, whether self imposed or imposed by outside conditions, if we are determined enough to succeed, we will find a way. In the case of creating the piece, the self-imposed limitations and boundaries were to write about the subject titled "Secrets Of Success", and to create each line to contain the exact number of characters and spaces. The outside limitations were the amount of time that I had to complete the project in and that the piece would be suitable for a general audience poster.
I realized that no matter what we strive for in life, there will always be limitations and boundaries to operate within and that if we will find a way to maneuver through them or not depends on whether we want to badly enough. With that in mind, I worked solidly on developing the concepts. Without a computer, that meant counting a lot of letters and dozens of rewrites but by the end of the three days that I had left, I had finished it just in time to fax it over to the poster publisher. To be honest, at that point I did not care that much if it was accepted or not, for I had found something within the task of creating it that would forever change me for the better. In my mind, I had already achieved success. The hidden secret could be rewritten by using the same number of characters and spaces as are found in each line of the piece as such:
"Limitations and boundaries line paths to success"
When I received the call that the piece had been accepted, it was more than a joyous feeling, it was also verification that the ideas I had discovered in such a short time represented something real about the success achievement process. This piece has been published twice as a poster since then and is the subject of new bookmarks available at this site and a book in progress. I hope that it may continue to be of some help to others who are looking for the way to not only achieve their dreams but also to do so successfully!
I have never before revealed this hidden Secret Of Success to anyone except a few friends and family members. Not even the publisher knew about it. Of all the people that I have ever met or discussed this piece with, only one person that I know of discovered the clue and deduced the meaning. If you think that you know the second hidden secret send me an e-mail and if you are right, I will send you a dozen free Secrets Of Success bookmarks.

Twenty-four Hours
Copyright 2002, By Don Wright - Jacksonville, Florida
Twenty-four Hours
It was another “egg” day. This is what Carlos and the rest of the boys who worked at the junkyard called a day like today. Last year, one of the guys had brought an egg to work and during lunch they all met in the back of the field of wrecks where no one could see them. They dusted off the dented hood of a black Mercedes and cracked open the egg on the painted surface. The three of them watched in astonishment as the edges began to turn white, then brown. The smell of frying egg mingled with the permanent smell of used oil and old gasoline. A smell Carlos could never seem to get out of his nose.
“Carlos . . . Carlos!” Carlos recognized Mr. Franks' thin voice yelling to him from the front office. Carlos was working on pulling the rear bumper from a Jeep. He dropped his tools, as he was expected to do, and sprinted through the narrow trails between the crushed and rusting heaps.
“Yes, Mr. Franks, you called?”
“What the hell are you doing out there, boy? I sent you out there an hour ago to get that bumper. Now get on it, the customer is coming. And after that, I need the A/C compressor from that `93 Mazda in the southeast corner. Now stop daydreaming and get to it before I have to fire you and hire you back just to make you act right!”
“Yes, Mr. Franks, I'm on it.”
Carlos trotted back out to the jeep. The wrenches he'd left lying in the sun were now too hot to pick up. He put a rag over them to let them cool a minute. He thought that he was guilty of daydreaming a lot, but who wouldn't? When you spend every day boxed in by four wooden fences that were so high the wind never got in, your mind naturally wonders to the outside.
At the end of the day, he shuffled through the front office where he was paid in cash from a roll out of Mr. Franks' front pocket. The bills always felt warm and greasy. Probably because Franks always had a shimmering ring of grease around his wrinkled lips and chin, the result of the ever-present bucket of fried chicken on his cluttered desk.
“Now, boy, don't you be late again tomorrow,” Franks said.
Walking home along the cracked sidewalk, he came to the liquor store where he was expected to spend his daily earnings on beer for his foster parents. After that came the fighting and yelling. Carlos always tried to be out of the apartment by then, and was careful not to come back until they were asleep.
Most nights he would sit by the docks and watch the shrimp boats gently bob up and down in the swells. He loved the water and often thought of trying to get a job working on one of the boats. At night he often prayed for a better life, a life where all of the negativity of the junkyard and the apartment would be washed away.
* * *
Walking past the docks the next morning on the way to the yard, something caught his eye. Leaning against one of the pilings was a hand-lettered cardboard sign that read, “help wanted.” He had the overwhelming urge to see what it was about. He carefully stepped onto the creaking deck boards and made his way between boats, looking for a clue as to who had written the sign.
He turned the corner on the dock and gasped when he saw what was before him. At the end of the dock was an immense white motor yacht. It must have come up in the night. The morning's sun sparkled on the windows and chrome. He walked up to it and stood in amazement. Nothing so great had ever been to this dock.
“Mornin', son.”
Carlos jumped. He hadn't noticed the old man coiling a rope on the deck to his right. The old man had a short white beard and a cap that was pulled down to just above his eyes. He walked up to Carlos and stuck out his hand. It was a big, powerful hand. The man's eyes sparkled like the chrome on the gigantic boat.
“Are you here for the job?” the man asked.
Carlos's mouth went dry. He didn't know what to say. He stuttered, “I saw the sign and just wanted to see - uh, I mean, I don't know anything about boats.” He was looking at his worn out shoes, embarrassed to be caught in an interview. For goodness sake, he was wearing the same dirty jeans and greasy tee shirt from the day before.
“Well, I'm looking for a young man who wants to learn, work hard and is not afraid to get a little dirty.”
“I work in a junkyard now, sir, that's pretty hard work, and I'm good with tools.”
“I see, I see,” said the old man, rubbing his chin whiskers. “Let me see your hands, boy.”
Carlos stuck out both hands and the old man looked carefully at one side, then the other. Carlos was embarrassed again. There was still grease on his knuckles and dirt under his fingernails.
The man spoke, “Tell you what, I can tell a lot about a man from his hands. `Looks to me like you might do just fine for this job.”
“What job?” Carlos asked.
“Well, lets take a look.” They walked up the ladder and onto the gleaming deck. The old man pointed out how it could be Carlos' job to keep the railings polished, the glass clean, the decks washed down. Everything the captain pointed out seemed more like a delight to do than work.
As they made their way to the back of the boat they stepped down onto the lowest deck where, right in the middle, was a huge chair.
“This is where the customers fight and bring in their prized fish,” the man said, “I've got some clients who pay me to take them out to where the big fish are. We help them catch their dreams. Now, let me show you something special right in here. “
He opened a small door at the front of the deck, and they both ducked into the engine room. Carlos had never seen anything like it in his life. On each side of the grated walkway were two huge diesels, both painted white. `Matter of fact, everything was painted white and clean as fresh snow.
“Now, part of your job will be helping to maintain these beasts, keeping them clean, and watching out for trouble. I'll teach you.” Carlos was unable to speak. The man opened door and led Carlos into an even smaller room. There was a narrow bunk, a couple of drawers, shelves and a minuscule bathroom. “This would be your room.”
“What do you mean?” asked Carlos.
“Well, this is where you will sleep and keep your things. This is the crew cabin. You would be the crew. I'm pulling her out this evening; heading for south Florida and adventure. What do you say?”
Carlos' head was spinning, He thought of Mr. Franks and the dusty junkyard, he thought about the apartment and fighting parents, he said, “I'm in.”
“Great,” said the captain, “Go get your things and report back here in a couple of hours, we'll get her ready to shove off.”
Carlos was embarrassed again to say that the clothes he had on were his “things.”
The captain took out his wallet and handed him a couple of crisp bills. “Go get yourself some tee-shirts, shorts and some deck shoes, maybe a book or two. I've got everything else we need.
* * *
Later that evening the silence at the docks was broken by the sound of heavy diesels laboring to propel their yacht out into the harbor. Carlos stood at the bow looking toward the mouth of the bay . He turned and grinned at the captain behind the controls. Carlos thought about how, in less than twenty-four hours, his life had been changed. Prayers had been answered. No more “egg” days - all negativity left behind on the shore, washed from his mind as easily as the water passing under the boat.
The boat turned southward as the captain pushed on the throttles and they settled into an easy, lumbering pace. Carlos busied himself wiping down the railing at the stern and for the first time looked over the side of the transom and noticed the name of the boat. “New Horizons.” Carlos smiled to himself.

Ecotourism, or Eco-tourism? The jury is still out on the spelling but not on it's ever growing popularity that equals multi billions of dollars of income to the tourist and related industries around the world every year. If you've studied this site even just a little, you already know that I am dedicated to promoting the concept for the sake of environmental and historical conservation, support of local cultures and for providing a venue for the building of world peace. (Not to mention for the fun and emotional healing that it can provide.) You can read more about eco-tourism here. Articles about the subject have not previously been included in this e-zine and online magazine, but due to recent letters and interests from site visitors, I am excited to announce that this area will be a new regular feature.

Eco-Tourism Can Help Florida To Recover
Florida needs your help! Having just lived through the four major hurricanes to hit Florida within a 6 week period was quite an ordeal, even for me with past hurricane experiences and in spite of being in one of the areas that did not take a first strike direct hit. What ever you have seen on TV or read in the newspapers, I can tell you first hand, it's much worse than anything that I have seen in the popular media. This subtropical paradise is currently challenged to recover from damages estimated to exceed hurricane Andrew's $34.9 billion, not including the loss of personal and business incomes related to the down time associated with preparing for and cleaning up after the storms. ( Let us also remember that many precious lives were lost as well.)
While it's true that many hotels and tourist attractions remain closed, there are still thousands of businesses that are not only open but are in desperate need of the tourists dollars that they depend on. Tourists and conventions have canceled reservations for visits all over the state for fear of the interference of their plans by another hurricane and due to the belief that the destruction may have left little for them to enjoy. Florida's tourism industry had barely recovered from the reduced travelers caused by 911 when the hurricanes started arriving and the futures of many businesses and residents are in serious peril.
The truth is, this is one of the best times in decades, that a person might ever pick to visit the state. Not only are there deals to be had everywhere with merchants and hotels running special promotions and hurricane sales, but also the winter crowds that would normally be present are missing and that makes the many pristine parks, beaches and other wild life areas even that much more enjoyable for the nature lovers. While some buildings may have been torn down, you can rest assured that nature has survived and the waves roll in just a beautifully as ever along Florida's 1,197 miles of white sandy beaches.
Although there are plenty of rooms, attractions, car rentals and all of the other things that people regularly come to Florida to enjoy, this would be an excellent time for conscientious Eco-tourists to pack up their bikes, tents and backpacks and head down to an area that really needs the support of their local culture. During the winter, the weather in Mid to North Florida will remain cool in the evenings and warm during the days and South Florida is always warmer by 10 - 30 degrees depending on the current conditions. Visitors looking for parks, waterways and beaches will happily find themselves enjoying Florida more like it was years ago, before tourism became it's major lifeline rather than agriculture, and the fishing industry.
Activities that an eco-tourist can enjoy in Florida include: Hiking, Swimming, Snorkeling, Canoeing, Kayaking, Horseback riding, Bird watching, Star gazing, Off road biking, Whale and Dolphin watching, Picnicking, Surfing, Fishing, Archery, Camping, Shell collecting, Visiting historical sites including everything from Ancient Indian ruins, to the nations oldest city, to Civil war forts to the Cape Canaveral National Space Center and Preserve, for starters. Plus, don't forget that forever under rated vacation activity that is by far one of MY favorites: RELAXING!
Where should an Eco-tourist go? In a state that has over 8,000 miles of tidal coast line, 1,197 miles of beaches, 11 national parks, 150 state parks, thousands of local parks, 7,800 named lakes and 12,000 miles of rivers, it would be hard to suggest one place above all others or even just a few. Florida has one of the most unique ecosystems in the world and contains many major historically significant sites. Any place you pick to visit will have lots to offer and will be thankful for your business.
I would like to also encourage my Florida readers to consider doing their winter vacations through their home state this year as well, rather than gong else where. By doing so you will be not only helping your neighbors, but in a trickle down economy that mostly begins with Tourism, every dollar you spend will make what ever business that you depend on a little stronger and more secure in these very unsettled and insecure times.
You can't visit Florida but would like to help it's thousands of victims, many of whom are still homeless? The Red Cross is supplying shelter, food, clothing, blankets, ice, water and other needs and are taking donations at: https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation-form.asp
More ways to help, and listings of additional organizations that are providing relief and accepting a variety of types of donations can be found at the Network for Good:

What a Difference a Day Can Make.
By Wanda Hope Carter
It seems amazing when you think about it, what a difference any one day might have in one's life. Lot's of big things can happen in just one day, things that can change our life forever. In one day we might: Meet our future mate, Find a new job, Graduate, Decide to move to another state or country, Make a friend, or Move into a brand new home. Looking back on things that seemed to have happened on one particular day, what we will find is that those things may have materialized on one day but they were actually in the making for most of our lives up until that very day.
Knowing that no one day stands alone can help to get us through those other more mundane days. You know the ones. They seem to repeat themselves for weeks and months at a time. Like: Wake up, Have Breakfast, Go to School, Come home, Do chores, Do homework, Call friends on the phone, Take a Shower, Go to bed, Wake up next day, Start all over, etc. We all have many of those kinds of days and they often seem rather boring. But, the truth is that they are far more important than we might ever imagine. All of those days are filled with the essence of Everyday Magic. Every choice we make, every word we speak, every life we touch is the basis of everything that happens to us next.
Don't forget that it is because of how we spend those seemingly less landmark days that we end up with the exceptional days. So, the next time you are feeling like you are wasting your time, remember that there is no such thing. Time is a commodity that is always spent and it can never be saved. Another way to put it is: "Time used wisely is an investment for the future". To be able to better remember this from now on, every morning when you wake up, no matter what you might think that you know about how your day will go, look at yourself in the mirror, SMILE really B I G and say to yourself, "GOOD MORNING! HAVE A NICE DAY!" Pretty soon, you will see the difference in those "used to be boring", days. By shifting your focus towards the good they will bring, they will in turn bring the good into the day.
